Controls Engineer Description
Our client, a manufacturer of capital equipment with integrated industrial controls, is seeking a Controls Engineer to join their team in Billerica, MA. This role is responsible for the design, support, and continuous improvement of PLC-based control systems, including HMIs, sensors, and data logging solutions. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with PLCs and a solid understanding of industrial electronic components such as breakers, fuses, relays, contactors, motors, wiring, switches, temperature sensors, power supplies, and connectors. To be successful in this position, you must display strong problem-solving skills, provide exceptional technical support (internal & external), and be comfortable working across multiple projects within a smaller-sized organization. This is a highly impactful position with involvement in both new product design and the optimization of existing systems.
Controls Engineer Responsibilities
• Design, support, and improve PLC-based control systems
• Develop and integrate new features and enhancements to existing products
• Conduct testing and troubleshooting, implementing bug fixes and system updates
• Provide internal and external technical support and troubleshooting
• Perform root cause analysis and testing of failed or returned components
• Design, wire, assemble, and test prototype control setups
• Assist with component selection, qualification, and vendor approvals for control hardware
• Recommend and implement product improvements and upgrades
• Maintain and revise technical documentation, including user manuals and system guides
• Create and update electrical schematics using AutoCAD LT
• Train manufacturing staff on system updates and new product features
Controls Engineer Qualifications
• 3+ years of experience developing and troubleshooting PLC and electrical systems is required
• Experience with Industrial Control Systems (ICS) is required
• Proficiency in HMI development (touchscreen or similar platforms) is required
• Experience creating and editing electrical schematics is required
• Working knowledge of common industrial electronics (ex: relays, breakers, & fuses) is required
